A Niagara-based artist with rural roots, Shields developed her passion for photography during a career in education which included Visual Arts. Shields exhibits annually at the Pelham Art Festival and in members’ exhibitions at the Niagara Pumphouse Gallery and the Women’s Art Association of Canada. In 2020, she participated in the juried virtual Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. A past member of f8 Photography Collective, Shields exhibited with the Toronto group between 2010 and 2020.
The photography of trees has always been a subject of importance in Shields’ work. Childhood tales of magical forests may have fueled her imagination, reinforced by viewing James Cameron’s Avatar, but today her images are grounded in reality…they focus on the beauty of trees and her respect for what they contribute toward sustaining our living planet. Every tree is worthy of human veneration for its role in carbon capture and oxygen production, not to mention a long list of other benefits they provide.
