No Man Left Behind

Aven McCarthy

“No man left behind” is a very repetitive saying spoken in the military to a fallen comrade. I really wanted to capture the essence of those words and convey them in my artwork. The time period I set this piece in was around the end of the First World War, between 1916-1918. I wanted to use watercolour in this painting to really bring out the muddy or unclean feeling in this scene. I wanted to make the main figure appear strong and determined, in his attempt to carry his comrade to safety.
